Heart Divided

Happy Memorial Day to you all!

*thanks tumblr*

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend! I'm getting a late start on posting this week, as I have had tons going on lately. Lucky for you a good bit of it deals with new products for the Embellished shop! I will report more on that soon, but in honor of Memorial Day I thought this would be the perfect moment to start a new series: Heart Divided.

Upon arriving here in France I immediately (and naturally) formed a list of everything I missed from the States. Now that I've been here for 8 months I have a second list of things I know I wish I could bring back with me when I finally move home. I hope you enjoying learning a bit about the goods of other cultures, and learn to also appreciate the wealth that rests around you!

Memorial Day was of course Monday, I realized this...Sunday night. There are lots of things that I just don't have pushed in my face on every billboard anymore, therefore I am constantly playing catch up. For all the recent political changes, entertainment buzz, and even little things like American Idol, I have to devote time to researching to try and stay adrift in my own country. There aren't commercials on TV in France like in the States, the commercialism is much more played down. That of course has good and bad points, but alas I will unavoidably cover those very soon.
On the flip side, it is really interesting to be cognizant of so much that goes on outside the States. I feel much more informed, much more intellectual, and as an educated person I enjoy learning other people's cultures and points of view (whether I agree with them or not).

What's your International Know-How?

London's Calling

I hope you all are set out to have a wonderfully exciting weekend! I am off to London today for the first time ever and I am very excited to add this stamp onto my passport. Don't you love racking up those stamps? I will of course report back with fun photos from the fun life of the Brits next week!

*merci Tumblr*

Do you have any fun London Must-Sees?

An Introduction to My Ridiculous Project

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a man in possession of too much free time must be in want of writing a blog. In so doing, it is necessary to establish a gimmick for said blog. Inspired by other writers intent upon watching all the films in the Criterion Collection of the IMDb Bottom 100, this blog aims to do something similar...

I am going to watch every film franchise ever made. (I am insane.)

For the sake of my sanity primarily, we must define what constitutes a film franchise lest things get overwhelming. My primary guideline is this – A franchise needs at least 4 films. That means self-contained trilogies are off the table, as are any series that didn’t have the longevity or whatever to make it to four.

Secondly, I am only counting films that have been released theatrically in their countries of origin. This means no direct-to-video, no made-for-TV, no other strange hyphenate offshoots. This rule has been created mostly to protect myself from having to watch the entire Leprechaun or Land Before Time series, and surely you will grant me that. However, Pokémon and any of the other flabbergastingly multitudinous anime franchises have been released theatrically in Japan. I still have to watch those!

There is also the question of how to consider remakes, reboots, reimaginings, spinoffs, prequels, interquels, crossovers, and any other oddball variations. There are so many weird permutations out there, and I’m afraid they’ll have to be decided on a per-series basis. This means I can decide, 25 or so Godzilla films in, if I have the stomach to endure that damned American remake. Or how King Kong fits into it all.

Despite these limitations, there are still roughly 181 film franchises I must watch, with nearly two thousand movies in total! And growing! This accounts for everything from well-known Hollywood blockbusters, to old B-movies and serial programmers from the 30s and 40s, to countless obscure foreign creations.

For the sake of the upcoming decade or so of reviews, I have arranged the franchises entirely at random, weighted by the number of films per series. Maybe later on I could list out all these franchises (trying to conserve space at the moment). For the time being, though, here is a taste of my immediate future (again, picked at random):

The Fast and the Furious (4 movies)
Ilsa (4 movies)
Karl May (23 movies)
Andy Hardy (16 movies)

Yeah, I never heard of some of those either. The Fast and the Furious?! Huh?!

This whole exercise is gonna be that way.

In Lights

Let me tell you about a little obsession I have had since childhood darlings: singing. I also happen to love dancing, although I have no training in this area. So naturally a world where you can break out into song and dance at any (and most) given moments is of course one in which I would love to live. Just think of Amy Adams in Enchanted and you will understand.

*merci tumblr*

I usually manage to catch one musical a year and I am beginning to feel the urge to be enchanted by another one soon, although I know it will sadly be a while before I can. Far away from the glistening lights of Broadway, I must wait until I can get myself back to the Theater District. My first stop will be Wicked which I have been dying to see for years now, ever since it came out. Immediately followed of course by Junior's Cheesecake just down the block, if you haven't ever tried this cheesecake, your life is not complete. It is single handedly the greatest thing in all the world.

What is the next musical on your list?

Know Your Worth

Always know you are beautiful. Always know your worth, because if you base it on what the boy of the moment thinks about you, then you are only setting yourself up for heartbreak, disappointment, and disaster. Luckily for me this is never a lesson I had to learn the hard way, it was always ingrained in me by my parents from birth, but I know for many of my friends and many of you gorgeous darlings it can be a struggle at times.

If you know how beautiful and priceless you are, you can demand nothing less than that as treatment towards you. That is, after all, nothing less than what you deserve. You don't need to be Scarlett Johansson, you are YOU and that is just as wonderful, if not even better. Exude that confidence and you will find that person who lifts you up even higher than you ever thought possible.

*thanks tumblr for the pics*

Have a beautiful day Gorgeous!

Lost: The Final Review

After multiple years, multiple storylines, multiple plot twists, and thousands upon thousands of mysteries thrown about, the cult hit Lost has come to a conclusion. This television show was easily one of the most frustrating and demanding moments in the history of television, because of the sheer amount of details and the sheer amount of material presented. What started as just a plane crash turned into an emotional sci-fi roller coaster full of twists, turns, births, deaths, revelations, redemptions, and themes about fate, destiny, love, and the good ol’ battle between science and faith. Overall, the show revolves around life against death, and evil vs. good. This wasn’t your typical drama; it was an extremely deep show that required extensive background knowledge about literature, religion, and symbolism. This ADD society was not prepared for such a show, and that was (partially) why the ratings were dropping on a yearly basis

Whatever the reason, Disney decided to cut down the show into a sixth season and none further. Whether the writers will admit this or not, the show required at least ten seasons before everything was to be explained and examined. The first two seasons created so many questions, it was virtually impossible to answer them without sacrificing the heart of the show: character development and character interaction. This is why (in my opinion) science doesn’t blend well with faith, leading to one of the big conflicts in the show. With science, in a cold, calculated manner, presents you with facts and statements about why things are the way that they are. The sky is blue because of reflected light, something about the sun, yadda yadda yadda. With faith however, not everything has to be explained, you leave it all up to a force or greater power to explain why we live, why we breathe, and why we are here. God created the skies, He created them blue. With faith, more heart and more emotion is poured into the answers (they usually generally explain that someone upstairs really loves you).

This is where the show splits into two: we have the scientific fanbase that wants to know why the island is the way that it is, and why it does the things that it does; and then we have those more into the characters, more into the decisions and life choices made by them. Those that want answers are not as obliged to spend an episode learning about Jack’s inability to recover from post-Island life. They want to know the 5 Ws of the island, even though if those were answered they would lead to more questions.

Were the writers written into a corner? In some ways yes, but for the most part they clearly knew what they were going to do with the show. Basically, they knew the beginning and end destinations—they just hadn’t figured out the journey, the way to get from Point A to Point B. If you look back to the early seasons, they match cleverly well with the later revelations (just look at the smoke monster for example). Lost is hands-down, the biggest and baddest example of using Macguffins up the ying yang to advance the story. Macguffins are plot devices that are never truly explained, but advance the story and motivate the characters within the story.

Hitchcock was the originator and master of this film element. The best Macguffin in film history for example is the briefcase in Pulp Fiction; it never quite explains the contents inside it, but with the dialogue and acting you can tell it was something special, and extremely vital. The island is basically a Macguffin, a quite colossal one. Explaining all the mannerisms of the island would require two seasons within itself. The writers instead wanted each individual viewer to interpret the reason why the island is such a peculiar work of nature. One would scream cop-out, but seeing that Lost is the most detailed show in decades, we can’t quite come to that conclusion. Not with all the literary and mythological references throughout the multiple seasons. The explanation of the island was simple: it was a device that keeps the Devil-like character from escaping into the world. Very simple explanation, and while it doesn’t explain the behaviors, it does advance the television show as a whole. And, it still matches the basic theme of good against evil.

And now we come to the final episode, which is probably why you are reading this. What did the bitter critic think of the series finale of the television show he invested years upon? The answer is simple: the ending was spectacular. We will never truly get all the answers, this is impossible. They dug a hole so deep there’s no way of getting out, and also reality gets in the way (actors not wanting to return, kids growing up). However, the writers patched up the hole so beautifully, we can (and in my opinion should) pretty much forgive them for almost all the loose ends, and I admit, there are plenty. But sometimes, its best just to leave the mysteries.

Part of the appeal of Lost was all the mysteries, all the curious circumstances and moments. Lost is about characters and us viewers being lost in a world they (we) can’t quite comprehend or explain. If you explain a mystery, it loses its aura, it basically becomes a question-and-answer statement. Lost’s aura of the unknown is what kept it from being your average character-driven-ensemble-cast show. We became just like Jack, Sayid, Sawyer, and the others. But the producers were hoping we would finish just like the characters did: not getting all the answers but learning the important lessons along the way. Lost taught us to love, taught us to forgive, to forget, to move on, and to never judge upon first glance. By the end they didn’t figure out the island, but they figured out that the key to true happiness is by sticking together, by forgiving each other, and by letting go and moving on. That’s exactly what they all did, and they all met the kingdom of “heaven” towards the end. And we the viewers can discuss all the loose ends for months on end.

Lost was not about the destination, it was never about the 5 Ws and the How. Otherwise, it would have been a lengthy mini-series. Surely, there would be more explanations and more loose ends disappearing, but we wouldn’t have the epic character-driven moments that Lost became well-known for. If Lost were an answer-driven miniseries, then we wouldn’t have the tiny touching character moments like Desmond calling Penny in The Constant, like Jin and Sun meeting their unfortunate end a few episodes ago, or Richard re-uniting (not long) with his wife who had died. We would never have seen Jin’s reaction when he finally sees pictures of his child, when Hurley says good-bye to Libby, or when Ben loses his daughter in front of his eyes. Last, but definitely not least, if the writers had gone the path of just showing the mysteries and explaining them, then the epic episode Walkabout (one of the best episodes of any show in history) would never have occurred.

Now, this is not to say I saw the ending coming. My personal theory for the sideways-timeline was that while the plane never crashed and the island supposedly went down, the events of 2004 would eventually lead to 2007. Made sense, right? My idea for the ending would be that everyone does escape the Island and moves on, except for Fake Locke and Jack, whom become the new Jacob and MIB. I also thought that MIB and Jacon = Cain and Abel. All were wrong, but coming up with theories and attempted answers was just some of the fun of Lost. Everyone had their awesome theories, and the ambiguous nature of Lost allowed for all these theories to thrive.

My only gripes: Sayid and Shannon (Eh, not that great a couple), No Michael (although technically he wasn’t that close to the core group), No Eko (although that’s the actor’s fault), and no final realization as to whether or not Charles Whittmore was good or evil. Besides that, I don’t think they could have ended the finale any better---but I was one more focused on the characters rather than the extensive little details and mysteries hounding us for years.

Bottom Line: Lost ended in an amazing manner, despite all the griping around the internet about the lack of answers. It didn’t matter how much they could answer in that final episode, we were not ever going to get the full picture, it just was not possible. This was a show that could have been ranked even higher among the greats given a little bit more time. No matter what kind of writer you are, there’s no way you can cram thousands of years of history involving a supernatural island into just six seasons. Impossible. Nonetheless, the resolution amongst all the characters that had seen and suffered so much, could not be any better. That final scene, those final moments, could bring tears to the coldest of hearts. If you had not followed the show, then you are missing out on some great writing, great acting, and all-around great television.

Lost, you will be missed, long after the finale.

The End.

Flip & Tumble Giveaway

Do you own a reusable shopping bag? Do you usually remember you forgot it while standing at the check out? ...Yeah, me too. The people at Flip & Tumble had the same problem, and thankfully, they did something about it.

1. What was it like taking an idea and turning it into reality?
Aside from just the excitement of occasionally seeing people carrying our bags, it's really exciting knowing that we started by just looking at the simple problem of forgetting your reusable bags, to getting to the point where we actually have customers letting us know that the bags are working for them and solving this problem. It's exciting to feel that your design is actually out there making a difference to people.

2. What has been the reaction of your consumers?
It's been really positive! I think the fun, squishy factor of the balls really draws people in, but I think it's the function of the design that keeps them using our bags. I think we've really struck a chord with shoppers who want a stylish, but easy solution that really works for all those unplanned shopping trips. We also find that most people find a ton of other non-shopping uses for the bags such as for travelling, carrying lunch, a light gym bag, etc.

3. Do you have a favorite moment or story with f&t where you realized you're really onto something?
Although it was tough at the time, one of our favorite company memories was when we stayed up until the wee hours sewing our first 50 bags, and then took them to a local farmers market the next day. We had no idea whether people would respond, or be excited, or buy the bags. Once the shoppers started to trickle in, we did our thing, and showed off how the bags work, and you could see the spark in peoples eyes, just wondering how this little ball turned into a full sized bag. I think it was then that we started to see that the bags could have real potential.

4. What's next for f&t?
Last year, we came out with the produce bag sets, and they've been a huge hit, largely because it gave shoppers a simple, affordable solution to the problem of plastic bags in the produce section. We're looking to keep up that same type of innovation where our products solve a real world need in a simple fun way. We've got some fun products in the pipeline that will come out before the holidays.

*thanks weheartit for the fun shots*

5. If you could have a super power what would it be?
Hmm. I think it would have to be be teleportation. It would be pretty amazing to be sitting in sunny CA one moment, and off to Tokyo, Brazil, or India the next. And you'd save a bundle on plane fares!

Great idea right? Is it as good as it sounds? YES!
I tried out the bag for myself and became an instant f&t addict! Its the size of your fist which can easily fit in your purse and will pop open and shove closed in under 30 seconds, no problem. It is my catch all bag for not just food shopping, but trips to the pool, and overnighters as well.

1. Unfold

2. Pull out bag
4. Enjoy an instant inner pocket
5. Fill with all your goodies!

Simha (Telugu-2010)

Cast:- Balakrishna, Namitha, Sneha Ullal, Nayanatara           Direction:- Boyapati seenu
Simha-Wallpapers
Hmmmm…however many people accept it as a super hit, it lacks the effective story telling and also portrays a lot of violence which is not so favourable for the lady audience of Andhra Pradesh. Balakrishna cracked a hit after a period of approximately 6 years and has made a good comeback into the industry with a new style. The first half is all about violence with too many fights since the beginning and the murder attempt on the hero at the end of first half is very sloppy and is not needed. The dance sequence with the college students and lecturers is very vulgar keeping in the view the dresses of the hero’s students and the way they dance with him. Coming to the second half, the best part of the movie resides here. The flashback scenes are very attractive and depict a new style of balakrishna with powerful dialogues yet again  and account for the success of the movie . The climax fight is not too good or not too bad but leaves an impression on the viewer. If the director could have made a better first half, the movie would have been an all-time hit. The background music given by chinna is too good and the music director chakri delivers good music. The movie didn’t showcase any hi5 stunts like in balakrishna’s previous movies and this had a good impact on the movie results. The director made a very good effort but the result still depends on the other departments. The worst thing in balakrishna’s movies is that his hair style doesn’t change in the whole movie and a lot of make-up on his face which clearly indicates that he is old enough. There is also not much good comedy in the movie. Finally, an average nandamuri fan will surely like this movie but others will not.

Dans Mon Handbag

The wonderful Anna of Around the Way Girl (you should totally check out her blog) tagged me in "Whats in Your Bag?" and I am happily passing on the blog love.

The Bag:
A fantastic girly rocked out bag I bought at a favorite store of mine in France, Promod. I love that it has ruffles and studs, it is quite literally me...as a bag! One of my favorite things about it, is when you open it, instead of the zipper running side to side, it runs front to back! So for those visually inclined like me, it zips hot dog-ways but the straps close hamburger-ways. I love that!

The Goods:
I actually have 4 bags that I regularly change between whether I wear black, brown, red, or something real casual. So, for the ease switching according to my Style Du Jour, on the ready, rests a pen, gum, lipstick, chapstick, and tampon, in each purse.

~Be prepared: Gum and Dental Floss because you never know when you may have an impromptu professional rendez-vous OR better yet a romantic spontaneous kiss with that special beau.

~ To-Do it Up: I always carry some kind of notepad with me, I'm afraid that if its not written down, it doesn't get done. I am VERY visual, so if I write it, I can remember seeing it, and do it!

~ Makin' Bank: A girl's gotta have something cute to carry her dough, after all we don't sit at home all day rolling it anymore! My Mom bought me this adorable vintage style clip wallet before I bon-voyaged off to France and I think of her every time I see it.

~My whole world: I LITERALLY go nowhere without my iPod Touch, it is my life. Its my calender, my Little Black Book, my entertainment, my motivation, not to mention my means of any communication. Apple has hands down made the invention of the century with the iPod, who would've thought it'd go so far?

~ C'est quoi?: Moving to France means you have a French/English Dictionary with you AT ALL TIMES! That way if I am looking for Bread Crumbs in the grocery store, they don't think I want them to sweep the floor for Les Miettes, they know I want Chaplure.

~ Ring-a-Ling: Of course my phone; used to be in use a lot more in the States, as in, I was glued to it, now I have a small pay-as-you-go phone so its really my watch, and in case of emergencies.

~Silky Smooth: A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. I hate that feeling, especially in Winter, of cracked hands, I make it a goal to always feel comfortable in my skin, besides then they are always "touchably soft!"

~Book du Jour: I read...a LOT. So currently my book is Wicked (I am determined to see that Broadway pronto in NYC upon my return), I quite often find moments to catch for reading reading when I am in line for things etc, and I love unraveling a plot and learning new characters!

~ Call me: A girl can never truly be aloof unless she is prepared with a pen to leave her number on a stranger's handsome hand, right? Well my pen is my ally. I carry it with me in every purse for notes, and to-do's that I think of throughout the day. Actually it quite often comes in handy for song lyrics that I am randomly inspired with.

~ Smoochers: Lips are important, they are where people look when you talk other than your eyes, and I am sorry ladies, no lip gloss will you ever find in my purse, it ruins the mood when you are more concerned with pulling hair off your lips than being kissably flirty. In this purse I have my amazing Laura Mercier Truly Red (I kid you NOT I tried every brand in Sephora and Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus, this is the only real RED I found) and it is kissably parfait! Also, Body Shop's 02, the perfect daily color, that actually FEELS like chapstick but wears like lipstick it is the perfect blend of both worlds.

~Spotless: You never know when disaster will hit i.e. lasagna over a lunch date, and I am on the ready for such a catastrophe thanks originally to my "Mary Poppins" Delta Zeta sister Megan years ago whom introduced me to this wonderment.

~Paparazzi: I live my life by photos, my 30 albums just on Facebook don't even come close to the fact that my camera is literally my diary. This amazing Casio Exilim is of course travel size, so my Nokia stays at home unless I know there's a photo-op. But I am always on the ready for the unexpected.

~ Working Girl: I carry business cards in every purse, quite often I wear my Embellished creations. As you know, in-person advertising IS the best, I never know when I will strike up a convo with a stanger about my shop and need the URL back to it!

~ Back to the basics: As I mentioned with lips before, they are important, and no amount of gloss or lipstick can cover cracked puckers. Carmex is this amazing creation that seriously when applied will cure your chapped lips overnight, no joke! I use it religiously and receive quite the compliments on soft lips...maybe you should try and report back darlings?...

~ Aunt Flo: If you don't come packin everyday darlings, then you just aren't prepared. You never know what purse you may be using when disaster strikes, and of course it will be mid-date in white pants, and you will need protection. Tampax Pearl is the one and only, comfort and strength, perfection of a product at its core.

Oops: I suppose I did forget my keys, they would be the driving force behind it all. Alas, by the end of the day they are on their key hook, ready for the next morning's action. The norm, car, house, food store card, flash drive...and of course an Irish bottle opener and some Lucky Brand flair!

Ok darlings, I spilled it so now its your turn! Passing on the gauntlet...and GO!
