We are now at a point where we constantly need to reconsider the world we live in. After 9.11, the recent major changes in the Middle East and the multiple tragedies of 3.11 in Japan mark significant moments of worldwide radical change. As we continue into the 21st century, we are faced with various issues stemming from the environmental crisis; the collapse of the economic system; and the collision between East and West. And art is intimately related to all of these issues. After all, is it not art that enables us to question the human condition and allows us to open the next door and glimpse at new horizons? The Res Artis General Meeting in 2012 will engage these compelling issues by focusing on the role of, and various approaches to, collaboration on an international scale. It is a long time since a Res Artis general meeting was held in Asia. We hope to consider the role of Asian institutions—mostly focused on small-scale activities and agendas—in establishing future collaborations and networks. Thus, artist residencies, where artists create work and exchange dialogues, will become ever more important sites. We expect that this general meeting will be an opportunity to open up such new horizons. Asia is structured on multiple values and cultures. Cooperation nurtured here is not cooperation based on existing singular values but rather on recognizing difference as a value in itself. Just as each star exists as an individual entity within a constellation, we will aim at gathering a constellation of cultures through collaboration. Upon the Moments of Possibility

Artist in residency programs are all about encounter. Taking a step into the unknown, the artist is lead by a curiosity and a need for new experiences and knowledge. This step may dramatically change one's world-view and is essential for the development of creative process. The artist's encounter with the local artists, citizens or townsmen and the local art scene is a moment of possibility to share knowledge and ideas. For the local communities, the artist residency offers a variety of chances for regional development. Especially in the case of residencies located in rural areas, the impact of these activities is strong, be it for the art scene of the region, the know-how of its inhabitants or by creating an atmosphere of creativity and openness. The image of the place and vitality of the town are boosted in a surprising way. Like in the case of the residency that keeps me busy, the KulttuuriKauppila Art Centre in a small town of Ii, in the north of Finland. In addition to creating a network of professional artists and encouraging locals to participate in the creative processes, the image of the town has changed. The two-year publicity survey (Iilaakso Ltd, 2009-2010) revealed that about seventy percent of the positive representation of the town, in newspapers, radio and tv programs, is focused around the art centre. It also means that regional development can offer possibilities for the publicity of the guest artists. The encounter between the residency guest and the local environment also shapes the residency program. A program for emerging young artists might work out well in one place, whereas a community art program is more suitable in another place. To reach proactivity within the program, the content and structure is important for the curators of these programs. As the curator Hanneke Frühauf from Switzerland says, the curator is responsible for the encounter between the artist and the locals. At the core of Res Artis, since the very beginning, lies the same concept: the encounter. Res Artis wants to offer its members a unique network of colleagues, which is reinforced in every face-to-face meeting, be it the Regional Conferences, biannual General Meetings or any other encounter. During these moments we build true co-operations – and later the hospitality becomes real, as you send a young talented artist to the other side of the world, knowing that she will be taken care of. As organisations grow, restructure and become more complex – just like the societies around us – the simple encounter is more valuable than ever. May 23-26, 2011 Debrecen, Hungary
MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Arts hosted the 10th regional meeting and conference of Res Artis, the worldwide network of residential arts centres in Debrecen, Hungary between the 23rd and 26th of May 2011.
Representatives of residency centres, artistic institutions, artists and professionals from the art world were present during the four days conference. The speakers and participants, who arrived from all over the world had the chance to meet their worldwide colleagues and to expand their artistic network.

The Res Artis office in Amsterdam is growing! 
Lillian Fellmann started to work alongside Mark Vennegord, Head of Office, this June for two and a half days per week. Before joining ResArtis, the Swiss-born curator and writer, held several managerial and directorial positions in Switzerland and the USA. Lillian Fellmann obtained an MA in Political Philosophy and an MA Critical Studies. She is the founding director of the Center for Art and Politics in Amsterdam, and conducts research on the intersection of art, politics and social change in East Europe and the Middle East since 2008. Variations – innovative residency structures 
In addition to their normal, longer-term residency programs, these Res Artis members are organizing specific, intensive residency events, focusing on a particular technique or theme.
Primo Piano Atelier offers residencies primarily in the form of their workshops and classes, through programs specializing in various forms of printmaking. The 1-2 week workshops are taught by Primo Piano's co-founder Dores Sacquegna at her space in Lecce, Italy. During the workshop, the residents attend classes and have time to produce work on their own.

At the Banff Center in Canada, intensive residencies are organized with a directing faculty member around a specific theme or idea. Their upcoming residency 'Art and the effects of the 'Real'' is lead by Ken Lum and will include weekly seminars, discussion groups and film screenings. (July 25th application deadline)

New Residency: Dar Al-Ma'mûn, Morocco 
- Where is it?
Dar Al-Ma'mûn is an international center for artistic residencies located 14 km from Marrakech in the village of Tassoultante (Ourika valley). The project emerged as a cultural platform that aims to provide support to emerging artists in visual arts and promote Moroccan and African cultural identity beyond borders by working towards intercultural exchange. We believe that culture is a key expression of local, economic and social development. - What is it?
Dar Al-Ma'mûn will include artist studios, a research center in literary translation (Arabic-English-French) and a library open to all, specializing in social sciences, literature, poetry, aesthetics and art history. Throughout the year, Dar Al-Ma'mûn will offer lectures on social themes and cultural events to educate audiences on contemporary creation in a will to openness.
