Mean Girls - 2004 - TV Broadcast

Thursday, June 7, 2007

Tina Fey's Mean Girls really hits home, and not only because it takes place in Chicago--nor because of Tim Meadows' shout-out to the Chi-Town 'hood, when as the principal of a posh North-side school he openly declares in a rioting hallway full of teenagers, "Hell no, I did not leave the South Side for this!" Though all of that helps.

I have both substantial and superficial reasons for loving this film, and in the latter category falls Lindsay Lohan in her sweeter and more full-figured years--the ones before the embarrassing splashes across Us Weekly and sad stints in rehab. Lohan is a lovely actor, and without qualifying that statement further, it's visible in her performance here. Sadly, she's more associated these days with the starlets who aren't famous for much more than sporting Marc Jacobs and Martinis at midnight. But I've got my fingers crossed for a change in that. She's barely twenty-one, so there's plenty of time to pick herself up.

I was also excited about Tim Meadows, the perma-face around the SNL studios for a lot of years. He plays the high school principal, as I mentioned before, and is his usual self, which I think is usually funny. He's single, emasculated, and in love with Tina Fey's character. That's enough for me.

On the more substantive end, Mean Girls is a just a really smart teen movie. Tina Fey wrote the female characters in particular with a lot of heart, and even more snark. The girls' sense of humor keeps them real, like a reality check against the melodramatic inclinations to which they are inevitably prone. A good example is when Cady (Lindsay Lohan), the new girl who's been betrayed by her plasticky pal Regina (Rachel McAdams), imagines Regina's been struck and killed by the school bus. At the moment the two bicker in the middle of a crosswalk the bus hits Regina; cut to Cady, "and that's how Regina died," she says, only to have that dramatic fantasy broken by her comic voice of reality that she is not.

And because Regina doesn't die it means she's got to stick around to resolve her bitchiness with Cady (and the rest of the school.) It proves that the girls are reasonable beings, and that they have the capacity to direct their lives in a progressive manner. I think of Mean Girls as a salute to Clueless, only with far fewer cultural references, and a whole lot more intellect.

Felony charges against Lindsay dropped

Felony grand theft charges against Lindsay Lohan have been dropped based on insufficient evidence. The allegations originated from a woman who claimed the Georgia Rule actress had stolen a shirt and other clothing from her apartment while she was out of town. The woman alleged that her housesitter had invited Lohan to the home and later told authorities she had given the actress some clothing. Photos were submitted to police of a plaid shirt the woman claimed was hers - except photos of Lohan wearing a plaid shirt did not match the one in the pics provided by the woman. An LA district attorney's office spokesperson told the Associated Press, "The bottom line is that Lohan can't be shown to have seen either taking or to have been later in possession of missing items and items she can be shown to have possessed were with [the housesitter]'s permission."

Trouble in paradise for Lindsay?

It seems Lindsay Lohan and new beau Calum Best have hit a rough patch already. The pair had a public screaming match at NYC's SoHo Grand on Monday night that began in the penthouse and ended in the lobby. "Calum's clothes were torn, and after a few minutes, they got back into the elevator and went back to their room," says a witness. The "screamfest" may have started over Best's slimy behavior at Cipriani Downtown the previous night, when he was reportedly "collecting numbers from all the models" behind Lohan's back. A friend of the Georgia Rule actress was overheard saying, 'All her friends with Calum would go back to London. He's just using her."

Lindsay sued by photographer

A paparazzi photographer filed suit against Lindsay Lohan yesterday in NYC, alleging the Mean Girls star struck him with her mom Dina's BMW last month in the West Village. Police were on the scene at the time of the incident, although no accident report was filed. The photog claims Lohan was "negligent, careless and reckless" and that he "sustained severe and permanent personal injuries" as well as economic loss. The day after the alleged incident, a source close to the actress told People mag that "the police totally took Lindsay' side" pf the story.

Georgia Rule director gave Lindsay tough love

Georgia Rule director Garry Marshall came clean about the infamous Lindsay Lohan reprimand he issued last year. "Once somebody walks on my set, it's my problem, but we can't go chasing them," the famed director said at the movie's NYC premiere last night. "This film is low-budget. We can't lose days... Tough love is a part of this business - she missed a day on the second week of shooting." Marshall had Morgan Creek Productions CEO James Robinson send the Mean Girls actress a stern letter that referred to her "all-night heavy partying" and "so-called exhaustion." "Jim wrote the memo, and she came the next day and we were fine," Marshall said. Marshall also weighed in on Lohan's recently cocaine video scandal, saying, "Any publicity is good publicity, but in this case, I think it distorts what a good actress Lindsay is."

Lindsay's mom rides her daughter's fame

Lindsay Lohan's mom Dina is using her daughter for more publicity - and hoping to land a job in TV. The 44-year-old brandished an Entertainment Tonight microphone at last night's Georgia Rule premiere, interviewing her daughter and other celebs at the event. "Dina wants to be a TV star," says an insider. "But ET may just be hiring her so they can get the Lindsay exclusive." A spokesperson for ET told PageSix, "Dina Lohan will be a special correspondent for the Georgia Rule premiere. We are looking forward to Dina asking the questions only a mother can." The elder Lohan has a prior relationship with ET after inviting the show on a plane with her and daughter Ali to go to LA to visit Lindsay in rehab at Wonderland earlier this year.

Lindsay vs. the paparazzi

Lindsay Lohan is raising eyebrows again - this time with a controversial Radar cover. The Georgia Rule actress agreed to pose for the magazine's story about paparazzi. "Lindsay wants to send a message," says Radar's editor in his editor's letter. To make a point about the dangerous side of being stalked by celeb photographers, Lohan is seen with a flamethrower, a pistol and a submachine gun. "I want people to pay attention," the 20-year-old actress said of the cover shoot. "This whole thing is just spinning out of control," says Lohan's rep. "Sooner or later, someone's gonna die."

On the town

  • Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson were hurried out of Tom Ford's Madison Avenue store when they arrived close to closing. "Well, are you going to buy anything?" the manager asked, not realizing who they were.
  • Hilary and Haylie Duff stocked up on Missoni shoes and Tom Ford sunglasses in Miami over the weekend - and actually paid for their loot.
  • Verizon Wireless has withdrawn its sponsorship of Gwen Stefani's tour after opening act Akon was videotaped performing simulated sex onstage with a 15-year-old in Trinidad.
  • Sex & the City alum Cynthia Nixon will kick off the ninth season of Law & Order: SVU, appearing as a woman with multiple personalities thought to have abused her baby.
  • Lawyers for Lindsay Lohan are demanding that the British newspaper News of the World produce the videotape they claim shows the actress snorting coke.
  • Rosie O'Donnell has her eye on Bob Barker's gig at The Price is Right, but the outgoing host "is adamant that Rosie not get the gig," according to a source.

Lindsay outed in drug scandal

Pictures from a scandalous video of Lindsay Lohan doing drugs - the existence of which was reported earlier this week - have been published in the British paper News of the World. An alleged friend of the actress says the Mean Girls star snorted twenty lines of cocaine in one night and bragged about sleeping with Jude Law and James Blunt. The friend admits, "Lindsay does not care who sees her do coke and where she does it... She carries around a water bottle to try to fool everyone into thinking she is clean but she tips the water out and refills it with vodka and soda." Video evidence of Lohan's drug use was captured at Hollywood hotspot Teddy's at the Roosevelt Hotel just twenty days after the actress completed rehab at the Wonderland Center in Laurel Canyon. The video shows Lohan pulling a small bag of white powder out of her pocket in a bathroom stall, dipping her finger in and shoving it up a friend's nose before snorting some herself. Says the friend:
"That night I saw her do more than twenty big lines of cocaine. She was still up doing drugs at 11 am even though she had started about 8 pm the night before... She wasn't even trying to hide it and was blatantly doing it off tabletops, keys, books and in the wardrobe, where she was hunched over with her legs crossed almost bent in half doing it off some magazine on the floor... When she is on coke, which is most of the time, all the attention has to be on her... I have lost count of the number of times I have watched as she stripped naked in front of everyone. Then she loves to check herself out in the mirror as she parades around with her boobs hanging out.... She has told me that she has slept with James Blunt, Jude Law, Calum Best, Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio del Toro, Jared Leto and James Franco. She loves Brits and has told me she has slept with the singer James Blunt a few times over the past month. The last time was on April 15 after another house party. I think they went back to a hotel together afterwards... Lindsay told me she has messed around with Leonardo Dicaprio a while ago too but claimed that she didn't sleep with him. She also few to New York to go to bed with Jude Law... Going to rehab was all for publicity. She wanted people to see her seeking help but it hasn't got her off the drugs at all. In an average night Lindsay will do two and a half grams of coke on her own. She doesn't buy it - she is given it by friends and acquaintances, and it turns her into an angry monster. I have watched many a time Lindsay treating her staff like crap... That's why I'm showing this video. So the world can know what Lindsay has been doing and she can't lie about it to herself or anyone else."
Whoa. Those are some serious allegations. Go here to see more blurry pics from the video.

Lindsay's ex suing unknown MySpace blogger

One-time Lindsay Lohan beau Harry Morton has filed suit against...well, he's not exactly sure. The Pink Taco chain owner filed papers in LA on Thursday suing a "Jane Doe," whom he claims posted nude photographs of one of his friends on a MySpace page along with a false statement that the friend had AIDS. Morton claims to have suffered "emotional distress" and "lost business" after the pictures were posted and has been forced to "rehabilitate his reputation." He is also reportedly working with MySpace.com to identify the Jane Doe.

Lindsay back in the party scene

Lindsay Lohan may have fallen from rehab grace, if rumors are to be believed. Allegedly, Lohan was caught on cell-phone camera "partying" at a private event held in Beverly Hills last week, although no one has divulged exactly what the Mean Girls actress was doing. Paris Hilton, her ex Stavros Niarchos and Idol host Ryan Seacrest were also in attendance at the party, which was reportedly disrupted when a large rat ran through several rooms. When asked for comment, Lohan's rep said, "I have not heard of this."

Lindsay confesses love for paparazzi

While Lindsay Lohan seems to have tamed her problems with alcohol, she admits she has another addiction: shopping. "I talk about my impulses with my therapist - I have a shopping problem," the actress told Nylon mag. She also revealed that she kinda likes the paparazzi: "I get embarrassed about the paparazzi if I'm in a chic restaurant, or when I was in the AA meetings... I feel really disrespectful because those people are doing that for themselves and it's no one else's business. But that was the only time it was embarrassing. Other times, I obviously like it... I wouldn't ever want them to not take my picture... I'd be worried. I'd be like, 'Do people not care for me?'"

Keira upset with Lindsay over film withdrawal

Keira Knightley is reportedly "furious" that Lindsay Lohan pulled out of the film the pair were set to co-star in. Lohan withdrew from The Best Time of Our Lives due to contract issues three days before the movie was due to begin filming. Knightley is unhappy with the Mean Girls star's decision as she was involved in getting Lohan to appear in the film, for which her mother wrote the screenplay. However, Sienna Miller is now likely to step into the role, according to Variety. Miller and Knightley will play two women fighting for the attention of poet Dylan Thomas.

Lohan pulls out of biopic

Lindsay Lohan has pulled out of an upcoming Dylan Thomas biopic due to contract issues. The Mean Girls star was set to team up with Keira Knightley and Cillian Murphy in The Best Time of Our Lives, playing the poet's wife Caitlin MacNamara. Lohan's rep confirmed that her client "was supposed to start filming on April 21" after a quick trip to Japan to shoot her Jill Stuart ad campaign. "...they were unable to come to terms," says an insider. "She didn't back out and they didn't pull the deal. But there were changes that weren't to her liking, and that was that."

Lindsay talks rehab

More scoop from Lindsay Lohan's Allure interview, where she talked about her stint in rehab. Lohan said that after she woke up last January 17 to paparazzi both on the ground and in the air outside her house, her therapist suggested she check out the Wonderland Center. The Mean Girls star drove to the Laurel Canyon facility with a friend who had "more problems than I did," and check the place out, finding "a quiet room, all white, with parquet, and it was different! I just felt safe," Lohan says. "I thought, 'I'm going to stay here tonight.' And I stayed there. For a month. It was great." And, despite having attended AA meetings for close to a year, Lohan says, "I don't know that I'm necessarily an addict," but that she feels motivated "to keep everyone around me happy." Of her famously troubled family, the Bobby actress says, "I feel like a second parent in the sense that I helped raise my family. The fact that my sister is not here - I'm kind of angry with her. Because it freak me out." (At the time of the interview, Lohan's 13-year-old sister was at home with a headache.) "When my friends and family are around me, I feel like they're safe," the actress says. "The craziest things can happen, but it's okay." And of the gossip that she had text messaged friend Brody Jenner from rehab to say she couldn't wait to have "sex and McDonalds" again, Lohan laughs, then admits, "I'm a sexual person - everyone is, I think. And once a month I'm a McDonald's person. Everything in moderation."

Lindsay surprised herself with rehab

Lindsay Lohan surprised herself when she checked into rehab to treat her drinking problem. In her first interview since finishing treatment at the Wonderland Center in LA, the Bobby actress told Allure mag, "It's so weird that I went to rehab. I always said I would die before I went to rehab."
