Update on the Jessica Simpson/John Mayer split rumor... It's true! "They have broken up," a source told People mag. "But they have broken up and gotten back together at least ten times before." The pair are still in constant contact, however, emailing and talking to each other many times a day. "They talk to each other at least six times a day," says the source. "I don't know if this breakup is permanent, but for right now they are broken up." As for the reason for the split, a source close to Mayer says, "John did say that he broke up [with Jessica]. He said that it was because he was just over it... He's fine about it, he's not upset - but he's definitely not looking for someone right now." Reps for both stars have declined to comment.

TMZ cameras caught Mayer clubbing solo at NYC's Stereo last night, while Simpson is in Cannes to promote her movie career. A rep for Mayer refused to comment on the singer's personal life, and Simpson's rep has not been reached.

Jessica Simpson's dad seems to be taking a healthier approach to her new relationship than he did with her former husband Nick Lachey. "If Jessica is in love, I love the things she is in love with," Joe Simpson says of his daughter's relationship with John Mayer. "I want her to be happy. I'm always a fan of his. I love him - he's got great music... I think the beautiful thing is that [Jessica and John] don't do the same thing. He's a legend already. There's no competition. He's a guitarist, that's his thing. Jessica is a singer. She doesn't play guitar, so there's no competition.

According to an inside source, Jessica Simpson's dad Joe is considering managing Britney Spears's career now that Spears has fired on-again/off-again manager Larry Rudolph. Simpson, who has managed the careers of both of his daughters, reportedly tried to set up a meeting with Spears over the weekend, although Jessica's rep denies it. Spears's rep has not commented.
